How to Make Calls with a Data-Only eSIM

Have a travel eSIM with data but no calling minutes? Use that internet connection to call landlines and mobiles with Tokly. Open Tokly in your browser, enter the number and reach your hotel, a restaurant or family back home. They answer a normal phone call, with no app or Tokly account needed. Check the rate below and add credit for your calls.

Can you make calls with a data-only eSIM?

Yes, using an internet calling service. A data-only eSIM provides the internet connection; Tokly connects your browser to a regular landline or mobile number. You do not need to buy a voice bundle from your eSIM provider to make a Tokly call.

Check the type of plan you bought: data-only and data-with-calls are different products. Airalo’s guide explains that some of its packages include voice and texts while others supply data only.

Calling a phone number or a contact in an app?

If you and a friend use the same messaging app, you can call each other there. To reach a hotel reception with only a landline number, you need a service that can call regular phones.

  • You have a regular phone number: enter it in Tokly. Your browser uses mobile data and the recipient answers on their landline or mobile.
  • You both use the same messaging app: use its calling feature over your eSIM’s internet connection.
  • You want to use your phone’s regular Phone app: check that the SIM selected for calls includes a voice service. Selecting a data-only eSIM for internet access does not add calling minutes.

How to call a landline or mobile with your travel eSIM

Use the dialer below to prepare your first call. For example, if you are visiting Thailand and calling a UK hotel about your next stop, choose the United Kingdom as the destination.

  1. Activate your travel eSIM following your provider’s instructions and select it for mobile data. Check that a website loads while using that connection.
  2. Open Tokly in your browser. Choose the country of the number you want to reach, or paste its full international number starting with +.
  3. Check the displayed per-minute rate. Press Call to continue to your Tokly account with that number already entered.
  4. Sign in, check your balance and add calling credit when needed. Allow the browser to use your microphone, then start the call.
  5. Keep the calling page open and your internet connection active. The other person answers their phone as usual.

What does an eSIM phone call cost?

You pay your eSIM provider for data and Tokly for the phone call. The call uses your data allowance, while the calling charge comes out of your Tokly balance at the rate shown for the number. Each call is rounded up to the next whole minute for billing. There is no calling subscription.

Enter the number to see its rate before calling. Country pages also show mobile and landline rates, with a calculator for 5-, 20- and 60-minute conversations. Choose the duration you expect and plan your calling credit before your trip.

Keep the conversation clear on mobile data

A stable internet connection and microphone access are the essentials. If the audio breaks up, move to a spot with a stronger signal or try reliable Wi-Fi. A headset makes it easier to hear in an airport or busy cafe.

If the other person cannot hear you, check the browser’s microphone permission and your selected audio device. Use a network that supports internet calling. On a laptop, the same Tokly account gives you another convenient way to call over Wi-Fi.

Call your hotel, a restaurant or family back home

Let the hotel know you will arrive late, book a restaurant table or catch up with a parent on their landline. Enter their number in Tokly and call from your browser using your eSIM data.

Save your important travel numbers in Tokly contacts, check their rates and add credit for the conversations you need. When your plans change, you are ready to call.

Do I need an eSIM with a phone number to use Tokly?

Can I use Airalo data to make a Tokly call?

You can use an active mobile data connection for Tokly, including one provided by a data-only travel eSIM. Select your intended data line, check that your browser is online and use a network that supports internet calling.
