How to write a phone number in international format

  1. 01

    Start with +

The plus replaces the exit code the caller would otherwise dial: 00 in most of the world, 011 from the US and Canada. Phones dial it correctly from anywhere.

  2. 02

    Add the country code

1 for the US and Canada, 44 for the UK, 91 for India, 49 for Germany, 63 for the Philippines.

  3. 03

    Drop the local prefix

Most countries put a 0 in front of numbers dialed at home (Russia uses 8, Hungary 06). It never goes into the international format.

Example: the UK number 020 7946 0958 becomes +44 20 7946 0958.

International format vs E.164

They're the same digits. The international format adds spaces so people can read it: +44 20 7946 0958. E.164 drops every space and symbol: +442079460958. Use E.164 in phone contacts, spreadsheets, CRMs and SMS tools so the number works from any country.

Common questions

What is the international format of a phone number?

A plus sign, the country code, then the number without its local prefix. For example, the UK number 020 7946 0958 is +44 20 7946 0958. Written this way, a number dials correctly from any country.

Do I drop the 0 when calling a number internationally?

Yes, in most countries, including the UK, Germany, France, India, Australia and the Philippines. Italy is the main exception, where the 0 stays. The formatter above handles this for every country automatically.

What do 00 and 011 in front of a number mean?

They're exit codes: what you dial to leave your own country's phone network. Most countries use 00; the US and Canada use 011. On a mobile, + does the same job from anywhere, which is why the international format starts with it.

Does a correctly formatted number mean it's in use?

No. The formatter checks the number against the country's numbering plan, not whether someone has it right now. The quickest way to find out is to call it.

Is the number I type stored anywhere?

No. Formatting runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to us. The number only leaves your device if you choose to call it.
